Sustainable Commute Fail

If you've been following this blog then you'll know that I'm attempting to replace the car trip I take to get to the GO station with a folding bike which I can take onto a bus or train as needed. The first week was excellent, with the only day I couldn't ride being the days when it rained or when I planned to shop for textbooks.

Unfortunately, a critical linkage in the folding mechanism of my bicycle became damaged yesterday, rendering the handlebars unable to remain in the upright position. As an unsafe condition, I had to take the bike to the Cycle Shoppe on Queen West immediately for repairs. It could be a month before it's back on the road, with a possibility of the problem reoccurring. In the mean time, I'll be riding my other bike to the GO station but won't be able to bring it downtown.

While I stand by my purchase, if anyone at Dahon (as their bikes do not suffer from this problem) wants to send me a free sample, I'll be more than happy to accept it and review it.

I have more than one bicycle in my stable for just these occasions. Much cheaper than cars, they are :)

Just read the back story on this adventure...way to take the and experiment, and that folding bike is pretty cool, hope it's up and running.

As someone who lives and works in Toronto, I've relied solely on the TTC since my arrival (I ditched my car shortly after getting here), but I've yet to work up the gumption to ride my bike around.

i've been riding my bike as much as possible to work.
The first day I got a flat tire in a ravine park and had forgotten my wallet. After I'd made the 1km+ walk thru the park, holding up my back tire I managed to get a super amazing TTC driver to allow me on the bus (free of charge) and with my bike (a huge No No in rush-hour). But after replacing the tube I was back on my bike the next morning.
I had other mishaps with my bike in the beginning, stranding me in various locations. But there is just nothing like the feeling of being energized first thing in the morning by the fresh air in your face.
I hope your bike is mended sooner than a month!
